Lipstick isn’t part of my everyday minimal makeup, but on occasion, it’s just what I want to elevate my look. Most green beauty brands offer lipsticks upwards of $20, but for those of us who don’t wear it often, that price point is bit steep. I turned to Silk Naturals, the most affordable clean makeup brand I know, and was happy to find they have 36 velvet matte shades for just $5.99 each. The price is right, but do they perform?
I purchased 4 shades- Camisole, 90s, Bustier and Underground. They are vegan, but please note that not all Silk Naturals products are, so be sure to check each product description. They do not test animals, and all cosmetics are gluten free. If you have allergies or want to learn more about their ingredients, read this.
The shades I’ve tried are consistent in formula. The pigmentation is surprisingly strong. You can achieve an opaque look with one swipe. Another coat with build up the color slightly, but isn’t necessary. They are smooth and creamy, which aren’t terms typically used to describe matte lipsticks, but they aren’t completely matte. It’s more of a satin finish as there’s no glossiness, just a natural slight shine that fades with wear time. You can lightly blot to mattify it. This lipstick isn’t long wearing by any means, so you’ll have to reapply throughout the day.
The packaging is, well, not great. It’s not pretty, but it keeps the cost down. The stickers lift from the tube, but if you take them off, you won’t know the shade name. It’s not a huge problem for me, but it is an annoyance.
The amount of product is not stated anywhere on the site, so know that these lipsticks are tiny! It looks more like a slim lip balm and could easily fit in a pocket. You actually get a decent amount of product. My guess is it’s about the same size as a luxury sample (or a little more). You know, those really cute miniature lipsticks? I don’t mind this because of this price and honestly, I’ll be amazed if I completely finish any of them because I just don’t wear lipstick that often.
Camisole is a classic neutral pink. For me, it’s a great my lips but better shade. My favorite way to wear this is to gently pat it on with fingertips for a subtle flushed look. This application brightens up your complexion without looking like lipstick at all (first image). When applied normally, it’s very sweet and feminine (second image).
Bustier intrigued me, as it’s a peachy brown nude. I wasn’t sure if it would be a wearable nude lip color or completely wash me out, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s actually quite close to my natural lip color, just a bit darker. I think it would be pretty on a variety of complexions. I love mixing it with other lipsticks to soften colors that are too dark or pink.
90s is a deep neutral nude with red undertones. While I like it in the bullet, on the lips it accentuates the redness in my skin. It isn’t flattering on me, but if you love a reddish brown nude, it could be perfect for you.
Underground is described by Silk Naturals as a deep gray taupe, but I think it’s more of a deep chocolate with a hint of taupe. Basically, it takes brown lipstick to a new level. I think it goes without saying that this would look gorgeous on deep skin tones. Despite my poor application, I really like this one. Adding Bustier in the center creates the illusion of fuller lips and keeps the shade from looking flat.
As long as you’re okay without a super matte finish and having to carry around this tiny tube of goodness to reapply, I say go for it! They’re affordable, available in 36 shades (including metallic black!?) and comfortable on the lips.
Have you tried these? What is your go-to lipstick? I’d love to know.
